Koimala and Rasgetheemu: the King’s Island

The first king of all the Maldives, the legend goes, never meant to stay. Koimala was sailing from Ceylon with his bride when the wind died and left their two ships becalmed in the northern atolls. They rested at an island, and the islanders, learning who their guests were, asked them to remain — then proclaimed Koimala king where he stood. That island is still called Rasgetheemu, the King's Island.

Later he settled in Malé, but only with the consent of the Giraavaru people who already lived there; the island kept its own people and its own ways. That is roughly the arrangement here. A private villa, picked to your preferred standard — from a comfortable overwater room to a full pool residence — is yours for the trip, while the rest of the island stays a real, shared, working resort around you. You rule your corner of it, house reef included.

Retold from Maldivian tradition and published histories. Details differ between tellings; we share the story as it is told, with respect, and not as fantasy.
