Kalhuoffummi: the boat of the thakurufaanu brothers

In the 1570s, three brothers from the northern island of Utheemu built a small, fast boat called the Kalhuoffummi. For years they sailed it through the atolls by night, landing on a different island each evening and slipping away before daybreak — and they only managed it because island after island took them in.

When to go

Best season

The Maldives has two monsoon seasons. The north-east monsoon, roughly December to April, is usually drier with calmer seas. The south-west monsoon, roughly May to November, brings more rain and wind, but also some of the best manta and pelagic diving, and often lower prices.
